Kentucky Writers Fellowship

The deadline is May 15 of each year and the winner will be announced between June and July of the same year. We accept submissions year round.

Needless to say, given that the KY community of writers is a relatively small one, even those who know staff members of the Baltic Writing Residency are encouraged to apply. In turn, the winner is NOT chosen by anyone with a particular relationship to Kentucky, nor is the winner chosen by the staff of the Baltic Writing Residency. Rather, an anonymous member of the English Department of Harvard University will judge.

The application fee is $8.00 and the winner receives $500 which is paid out over several months.

The fellowship is open to any writer of English

  • who is a native of Kentucky, or

  • who has been living in Kentucky for at least one month, or

  • who lived, at some point in the past, in Kentucky for one year or more, or

  • whose selection is set in Kentucky, or

  • whose selection is about Kentucky.

  • who is or has been a student in a graduate program in creative writing based in Kentucky

Submissions, in a single WORD or PDF document, may include:

  • a selection of 10 pages of poetry, or

  • a selection of 10 - 20 pages or of fiction, creative nonfiction, or a play (the selection may be an excerpt, a self-contained work, or contain more than one story, essay, &c.)

We are also more than open to genre writing (YA, sci-fi, romance, thriller, crime, &c.)

You need not submit a cover letter, CV, publications list or anything additional to your writing sample.

Works that have previously appeared in magazines or books may be included, but it is not required that the work have been previously published. Translations are eligible.

Submission in more than one genre is acceptable, but each genre requires a separate submission.

We use Submittable to accept and review our submissions.
